A fire that damaged an "iconic villa" in Hawke's Bay is being treated as suspicious, police say.

The villa was being moved from Hastings to Waiheke Island when it caught fire on the corner of Nottingley Road and Lyndhurst Roads at around 2am on Monday morning.

The blaze began on the rear porch and spread through the villa, before a neighbour spotted it and called the Fire Service.

"We are currently treating the fire as suspicious," Detective Ross Alexander said.

"In recent months, there have been a number of suspicious fires in the area, which police are currently investigating."
