Wellington motorists will get their first taste of the new Haywards interchange when it opens on Saturday, weather permitting.

Contractors have been building the new $43-million interchange at the intersection of State Highways 2 and 58, at in the Hutt Valley, since 2015.

It does away with the existing traffic lights and traffic will be able to use on- and off-ramps and an elevated roundabout above SH2.

The whole project should be finished in July but in order to complete the last stages of construction, motorists will be moved onto the new layout on Saturday, depending on the weather, the New Zealand Transport Agency says.

"There'll be plenty of signage to guide you, and a lower speed limit will be in place to allow everyone to get used to the new layout, and the on- and off-ramps," it said in a statement.

The interchange will also feature a carpark with pedestrian access to the nearby Manor Park train station and "a unique set of cycle bypasses in both directions".
