Those who've experienced a wet night in the upper North Island haven't seen the last of it, with more rain and wind expected.

Parts of Northland have flooded, while Auckland is forecast to see some heavy rain and winds gusting up to 90 km/h, MetService says.

Heavy showers, hail and thunder are expected in Whangarei.

MetService also says there's a low risk of one or two small tornadoes for places close to eastern coasts.

There could be localised heavy rain which could get up to 10 to 25mm an hour and strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h

Heavy rainfall is also forecast for Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne.

In the South Island, the West Coast will have the heaviest rainfall south of the glaciers in Westland with 80-110mm.

Road users in the South Island have also been issued with a snowfall warning around Lewis Pass, Arthur's Pass, and Porters Pass.
