Heavy rain for Fiordland, Westland

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 10/10/2016

Heavy rain is set to drench southern parts of the South Island.

Westland, south of the glaciers, is expecting peak rainfalls up to 25mm an hour between Tuesday and Wednesday morning as an active front crosses the region.

A severe weather warning is in place with concerns the heavy rainfall could cause streams and rivers to rise with the potential for surface flooding.

A warning for the Fiordland's south of George Sound has been lifted but around the south and further north one remains in place with up to 90mm expected to accumulate on heavy rainfalls that have already hit the region.

There is potential for the wet weather to spread to the Otago, South Canterbury and Northern Westland Ranges where a severe weather watch has been issued by the MetService.
