Heavy rain for parts of South Island

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 4/05/2016

A severe weather warning is in place for parts of the South Island with heavy rain forecast over the coming days.

Bursts of heavy rain are expected over northern Fiordland, southern Westland and the headwaters of Otago and Canterbury on Wednesday night followed by the northwest Nelson Ranges the following morning, MetService warns.

A broad trough is forecast to move over lower parts of both islands before weakening on Thursday.

Up to 200mm of rain is expected to fall in the Westland ranges south of Otira.

"People are advised that streams and rivers are likely to rise rapidly and slips are possible in vulnerable areas," MetService said.
