Heavy rain, gales to batter South Island

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 10/05/2016

Heavy rain and strong gales are forecast to hit parts of the South Island, MetService warns.

A large trough is expected to bring severe weather to Fiordland, Westland, Otago as well as the Canterbury headwaters and high country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Up to 180mm of rain is expected over the Westland ranges, up to 120mm over Fiordland, while the other areas also expected to be drenched.

"Although this is not an unusually large amount of rain for these areas, there will be a period of steady rain during Tuesday before it becomes heavy and further heavy rain is likely later this week," MetService warned.

Streams and rivers could rise rapidly making conditions difficult for hikers.

Severe gales up to 130km/h are also expected to batter the Canterbury high country.
