Heavy rain warning for parts of NZ

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 20/06/2017

Parts of the country may be in for some heavy showers and gales towards the end of the week as the Tasman Sea delivers more rough winter weather.

Downpours are expected in southern Westland, Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne from Thursday through to Friday.

Two fronts are expected to bring heavy rain to Westland and Fiordland while a low and associated front is slowly approaching the north of the country, the MetService says in a weather warning.

The heaviest falls are likely in Westland south of the glaciers, and between 80 to 110mm of rain may fall over 18 hours in Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne. Gale winds are also predicted.

People, especially trampers, were advised to look out for rapidly rising rivers and streams, while slips and surface flooding may occur.
