Heavy traffic north of Wellington

Getting out of Wellington for the long holiday weekend is taking time.

Northbound traffic can expect delays of up to one hour and 45 minutes between Pukerua Bay and Waikanae, the New Zealand Transport Agency said early on Friday evening.

It first started warning about heavy traffic flows in the early afternoon and put out regular updates. By about 6.40pm the time delay was down to 45 minutes.

The route is State Highway 1.

Separately Kapiti District Council said it had some bad news for people planning a trip to Otaki Forks or Otaihanga Domain on Waitangi weekend - they're closed after downpours on Thursday night.

"We've been clearing slips, unblocking sumps and pumping sodden homes and flooded community facilities today, we've also backfilled and created a temporary road in Waikanae after a substantial washout cleared Rangiora Rd," the council said.
