The wreckage of a helicopter that crashed in Northland, claiming two lives, will remain on site overnight ahead of the start of a Civil Aviation Authority investigation.

Two men, reported to be forestry workers, were killed when the Robinson R44 helicopter crashed in Glenbervie Forest, north of Whangarei, on Monday.

Police say they are still in the process of notifying next of kin.

"The Civil Aviation Authority will be investigating the cause of the crash, which remains unknown at this time," police said.

"The post mortem and formal identification is not expected to take place until tomorrow morning. The wreckage will remain in place overnight."

Rescue Co-ordination Centre NZ picked up the helicopter's distress beacon shortly after 1pm.

The helicopter was located just after 2pm.
