A Swiss tourist reported overdue for almost a week from a trip to the Poulter River, near Arthur's Pass, has been found safe and well, police say.

Gregoire Bornand, 24, was located by a search and rescue helicopter on Wednesday near Mt White.

He has been left to continue on his fishing trip.

Police, who earlier expressed concerns for his safety, say they spoke to him and advised him about notifying someone of his plans before heading out and of any changes to his return date.

Mr Bornand had been due to return last Thursday, having set off from the Poulter River car park two days earlier.
