A large blaze at a south Auckland scrap metal yard has been extinguished by more than 10 fire trucks and two helicopters overnight.

The Fire Service was called early on Sunday morning after the fire started in a three-storey metal and car shredder at Sims Pacific Metals in the suburb of Favona.

The crews were able to put the blaze out by 4am Sunday but had difficulty reaching the source of the fire at the top of the building's third floor.

"It's quite open, it's got a lot of shredded metal around it [and] a lot of machinery," assistant fire commander at Counties Manukau Mike Shaw said early on Sunday morning.

"It is causing us a few issues just trying to get water directed into the actual fire area."
