Michael Hendry has shot low in the first round of the latest Japan Tour event, heaping pressure on Danny Lee's No.1 New Zealand ranking.

New Zealand Open champion Hendry shares eighth place at the Kansai Open, with his opening one-under 70 leaving him three strokes behind Japanese leader Shugo Imahira.

After moving past Ryan Fox this year into second place among Kiwis on the world golf rankings (at 131st), Hendry now has sights set on US PGA Tour-based Lee (125th).

Lee has made a sound start to the Byron Classic in Texas, carding an even-par 70 to share 41st place, six shots shy of American co-leaders James Hahn and Ricky Barnes.

Compatriots Tim Wilksonson and Steve Alker carded 73 and 75 respectively in Irving to be off the pace.

On the European Tour, Fox is 74th after the opening round of the Rocco Forte Open in Sicily.

His two-under 69 was eight strokes off the lead.
