Hendry earns British Open berth

Kiwi golfer Michael Hendry has finished runner-up at the Mizuno Open in Japan, earning a spot at the British Open at Royal Birkdale in July.

Hendry carded a four-under 68 for his final round at Okayama to finish 10-under for the tournament, five strokes behind winner Chan Kim of the US.

Hendry's finish is particularly satisfying after he missed qualifying for the Open last year when he carded a closing three-over 75 at the same tournament.

"This is the fifth time I've played in the Mizuno Open and I've never finished outside the top-11, so I've come close on a number of occasions," Hendry said.

"I've missed by one shot here at least twice, so it's nice to finally get over the hurdle and get the chance to go and play."

Hendry said he has already started planning his preparations.

"I'm going to start having a look at videos of The Open when it was played at Royal Birkdale in the past and prepare as best I can for it."

The 37-year-old New Zealand Open champion had made a patchy start to the Japanese season, failing to place in the top-20 through his first five tournaments.
