Hendry misses British Open qualification

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 29/05/2016

New Zealand golfer Michael Hendry has missed qualifying for the British Open in agonising fashion.

Hendry finished in a share of fifth place at the latest Japan Tour event in Okayama, two shots behind South Korean winner Kyung-Tae Kim.

Hendry shared the Mizuno Open lead with Kim through three rounds but his closing three-over 75 proved costly as the top four finishers qualified for the Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Kim had already qualified as the Japan Tour's leading money-earner in 2015.

It meant the fourth and final spot went to the highest-ranked player in the group sharing fifth on nine-under. That was Japan's Hideto Tanihara, ranked 114th, compared to Hendry's 340th.

Hendry, 36, has yet to contest a major tournament.

He had appeared poised to do so after his 65 at the Setonaikai Golf Club on Saturday was the best third-round score in the field.

It was Hendry's first top-10 finish of the season in six appearances.
