A German shepherd is being credited with saving the lives of two young children after a fire broke out in a Florida police officer's home.

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that the dog named Maxx helped firefighters find the 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl Monday night in their home in Longwood.

After firefighters arrived  to the home in suburban Orlando, they were able to immediately locate the mother and father of the family.

However, Maxx is credited with leading firefighters through heavy smoke to the location of both children.

Both the mother and father in the household are military veterans. The mother, Margo Feaser, is now an investigator with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

The boy was not breathing when he was pulled from the buring house, but rescuers managed to get him to breath with the help of oxygen.

The home was completely destroyed.

“We are grateful to the neighbors who jumped into action, and we especially thank the firefighters who selflessly entered the burning structure and risked their lives for the Feaser family,” Sheriff Don Eslinger said in a statement.

In the hours after the fire, the family members' conditions ranged from stable to critical.

“There is a long road of recovery and rebuilding ahead, but our Sheriff’s Office family will be with Margo and her family every step of the way. We know our community is behind them too, and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of support the family has received," Sheriff Eslinger said.

A GoFundMe page  has been created to help the family members, who are now homeless. As of Wednesday morning, over $13,000 had been raised for the Feasers.

Maxx received veterinary treatment for smoke inhalation.
