Highways to be made safer this summer

State highways in Otago, Southland and the West Coast will be made safer this summer.

The government says they're key tourist routes and it's putting up $3 million for the upgrades.

About $1m will be spent in each region, Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss says.

There will be new safety barriers, no-passing lines and keep left arrows, as well as rest area and curve sign upgrades.

The improvements are part of the Visiting Drivers Project's $15m road safety programme announced in October.

"There is no silver bullet," Mr Foss said.

"It takes a range of measures to improve safety across all parts of the system - roads and roadsides, speed, vehicles and road use."
