HMNZS Wellington comes to yacht's aid

The HMNZS Wellington was on a goodwill visit to quake-isolated Kaikoura when it was called on to help a yacht to safety.

Members of Coastguard Kaikoura and their families were on board the Navy's offshore patrol vessel for a tour when the request to assist the yacht drifting towards rocks near South Bay on Thursday came from police.

The Wellington sent two of its engineers to repair the yacht's engine and provided 20 litres of diesel to enable the skipper to proceed.

Its rigid-hulled inflatable boat then towed the vessel to the northern side of the peninsula, so the skipper could safely fix his rigging protected from the weather before resuming his trip.

About 30 crew from Wellington and 10 New Zealand Army soldiers visited three primary schools to play sports with the students and hosted a sausage sizzle for them on Thursday.
