Hockey New Zealand has taken a significant early step on the road to the 2020 Olympics by appointing Paul MacKinnon as its high performance director.

MacKinnon, who comes from high performance roles with New Zealand Rugby and Auckland Cricket, will oversee Hockey NZ's senior, junior and regional talent programmes.

A Hockey NZ statement says MacKinnon's task will be to ultimately help the Black Sticks men's and women's teams consistently win medals at world events.

Chief executive Ian Francis says he expects MacKinnon to make an impact when he takes up the role next month.

"We were looking for a high performance professional with a background in sport and Paul certainly ticks all those boxes," he said.

"We are thrilled to have Paul joining the team at Hockey New Zealand as we move on to the next phase of our progression towards medalling at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games."
