A second-half double strike from Connor Herewini has steered Midlands to a 3-1 win over Canterbury in the final of the men's hockey league.

With the scores level 1-1 at halftime in Whangarei, Herewini broke the game open with a fine solo goal, dribbling 30m from wide on the right and finishing in slick style.

He slammed home his second from the top of the circle with three minutes remaining to effectively seal the result.

Earlier, Joseph Lyons put Midlands in front through a neat flick finish but Canterbury replied on the stroke of halftime through a drag-flick penalty corner goal to Nick Haig.

Defending champions Central beat North Harbour in the play-off for third.

Canterbury's women made amends by winning their final, which was delayed for four hours by heavy rain.

The top qualifiers led 3-1 at halftime through goals to Olivia Merry, English international Joanna Leigh and Jenny Storey.

Stephanie Dickins struck back after halftime to add to Kayla Reed's early strike but they couldn't find a late equaliser.
