Holdsworth hurt in Supercars crash

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 19/06/2016

Holden's Lee Holdsworth has been taken to hospital following a heavy crash early in Sunday's Supercars race in Darwin.

The Team 18 driver was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment with reported leg and back pain.

Holdsworth's Commodore was bumped off the track at high speed and smashed sideways into a concrete barrier on a chaotic opening lap at Hidden Valley Raceway.

While the damage was primarily on the passenger side, the contact was heavy.

Holdsworth was one of five early casualties in Sunday's 70-lap race, with the Fords of Chaz Mostert and Fabian Coulthard ripped to parts in a separate incident on the same lap.

A mechanical issue forced the early retirement of fellow Falcon pilot Cam Waters, while another crash ended Coulthard's DJR Team Penske teammate Scott Pye's afternoon.
