A burst of heavy rain has flooded homes across Auckland amid thunderstorms on Wednesday night.

The Fire Service said it had received numerous flood callouts across the city, including in Forrest Hill on the North Shore, Parnell near the city centre, Half Moon Bay near Manukau and Cockle Bay from about 8.30pm.

A Metservice spokeswoman said parts of the city had received up to 20mm of rain in about an hour, prompting floods.

But she said the rain was quickly moving south and only covered a small area.

A severe weather watch is in place for the upper North Island until late Thursday.
