Four homes and a community farm have been burnt down in the Coromandel Peninsula as a scrub fire continues to threaten properties.

Fire teams have set up a command unit to co-ordinate the fight against the blaze, which started in Comers Road, south of Whitianga, around 5.20pm on Tuesday.

Three helicopters and around six trucks are also battling the blaze, which has burnt out 20ha and led to the evacuation of nearby properties, a Fire Service spokesman says.

He said fire crews would likely be battling the fire overnight and into Wednesday.

The spokesman said the fire had burnt through the Wilderland organic farm, which grows organic fruit and vegetables and promotes collaborative farming.
