Mana Party leader Hone Harawira is back in business.

The aggressive former MP swore during an election debate on Thursday night and threatened National's Chris Bishop.

The Auckland University debate was focused on housing policy but took a dangerous turn when Mr Bishop told Mr Harawira: "The last time you were an MP you turned up to parliament so little we had to pass a special law to make sure you got fined for not turning up."

Mr Harawira shot back, telling Mr Bishop he should fight for his people "and if you don't do it, get the hell out of parliament".

Newshub political editor Patrick Gower was MC and tried to calm them down, but Mr Harawira was fired up.

"If this is a housing question you should have slapped him down the minute he started making a personal attack."

He then told Mr Bishop to sit down "or you could end up in a place you don't want to be".

At that point Gower restored order, saying "we're all just going to take a little breath here".
