Horror outside primary school after woman is stabbed as police hunt knife-wielding attacker

A primary school has been closed after reports of a 'knife attack' as a woman was taken to hospital with injuries.

According to the Liverpool Echo , there are reports that a woman was assaulted outside Devonshire Park Primary School in Birkenhead at 8.20am this morning and has injuries consistent with those of a knife being used.

Police have set up a cordon around the area and the school has been evacuated.

A resident told the Liverpool Echo that police told her it was an "alleged stabbing".

In a statement, Merseyside Police confirmed the incident was a knife attack . 

They said that the incident may have been domestic related and that the offender is known to the victim.

Officers are now searching the area to find the suspect and a helicopter has been drafted in to assist.

The statement read: "Officers are in attendance at a primary school in Wirral this morning, Monday 15 May.

"Officers were called to Devonshire Park Primary school in Temple Road, Tranmere, at 8.20am following reports a woman had been assaulted as she walked back to her car.

"The woman has been taken to hospital with injuries to her hand, consistent with a knife being used. No-one else has been injured. The woman’s injuries are not 

"It is believed that the incident may have been domestic related and the offender is known to the victim. A search is underway to find the offender.

"An investigation is underway and house-to-house and CCTV enquiries are ongoing in the local area.
