Horror start for Danny Lee

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 30/06/2016

New Zealand golfer Danny Lee has endured a horror start to the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, carding eight-over 78 to sit mired near the bottom of the leaderboard in Akron, Ohio.

Ranked 45th in the world, Lee accumulated five bogeys and a demoralising triple bogey at the par-five 16th, where he zig-zagged his way down the fairway before finding the water.

He sits in a share of 55th place, ahead of only Australian Steven Bowditch and Japan's Michio Matsumura.

But he is in no danger of missing the cut as there is not one for the invitational tournament.

American William McGirt rode a red-hot putter as he surged into the early lead, firing a flawless six-under-par 64 on a breezy, sun-splashed day at Firestone Country Club.

World No.1 Jason Day of Australia shares second place with Argentina's Emiliano Grillo and American Jimmy Walker three shots back.
