© SNPA A horse has walked away with just a few stitches after the float it was in jackknifed and rolled on an Upper Hutt highway.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on State Highway 2, River Road, in Trentham at about 10am on Sunday, following reports a horse was trapped in a trailer that had rolled.

Fire crews worked to free the horse from the carriage and a vet gave the distressed animal a sedative before getting it out.

Police say the horse eventually walked away from the crash with only a few stitches on a wound.

The vehicle towing the float remained upright during the crash and no people were hurt.

The crash closed the road between Moonshine Road and Fergusson Drive, with a large queue of traffic building up as emergency services tried to clear the area.

It has now reopened and congestion has eased, the NZTA says.
