Housing NZ Wellington staff sent home

Housing New Zealand staff in a Wellington building were sent home on Friday so engineers could look under the carpet.

Staff were asked to leave the state housing provider's Boulcott Street office about 3pm on Friday, a spokesman said.

An engineering report obtained by the building's owner after the magnitude 7.8 quake on Monday said the building was structurally sound with some superficial plaster cracks.

But a change to the floor angle on level nine, which is one of the levels Housing NZ occupies, has been noticed.

Housing NZ arranged for it to be checked and this process has started.

The engineers have said they need to move desks around and pull up carpet.

"To enable them to get this work under way quickly we've asked our staff to leave the office before 3pm," the spokesman said.
