Housing project talks `intensive': PM

The government's discussions with councils over housing projects and using the $1 billion infrastructure fund have been "intensive" but announcements are still some way off, Prime Minister Bill English says.

The fund was set up in July last year for infrastructure such as roads, drains and water after councils said lack of finance was holding up projects.

So far nothing has happened, and in February the government said councils didn't appear to have any projects waiting for infrastructure funding.

Mr English said on Monday there had been "intensive negotiations" around financing and the actual projects.

"It's been about everyone getting a much better understanding of what roads and pipes are actually required to bring forward housing supply, it's about turning high-level plans into construction projects," he said.

"I wouldn't want to raise too many expectations about the next few months but an awful lot has been learned."

Mr English said it would take "a little time" to shake down and he doesn't anticipate any announcements before the September election.
