How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Thursday

NEW YORK — Stocks posted solid gains on Thursday as investors, comfortable that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates low, bought up stocks that pay big dividends.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 98.76 points, or 0.5 percent, to 18,392.46.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 14.06 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,177.18.

The Nasdaq composite added 44.34 points, or 0.8 percent, to a record 5,339.52.

For the week:

The Dow is up 268.66 points, or 1.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 38.02 points, or 1.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 94.96 points, or 1.8 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 967.43 points, or 5.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 133.24 points, or 6.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 332.11 points, or 6.6 percent.
