How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Wednesday

Stocks closed modestly higher Wednesday, led by energy companies as the price of crude oil surged to its highest level in 15 months. Companies that make consumer products were the biggest laggards. Investors brushed off new data showing residential construction slowed last month. Instead, the focus remained on the latest crop of companies reporting quarterly results.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 40.68 points, or 0.2 percent, to 18,202.62.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 4.69 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,144.29.

The Nasdaq composite added 2.58 points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,246.41.

For the week:

The Dow is up 64.24 points, or 0.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 11.31 points, or 0.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 32.25 points, or 0.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 777.59 points, or 4.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 100.35 points, or 4.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 239 points, or 4.8 percent.
