Three men face drugs charges after 200kg of ephedrine was found concealed inside a shipment of boxes of paper being imported from China.

It's the largest seizure of ephedrine in New Zealand. The drug could be used to make as much as $150 million of methamphetamine, police and New Zealand Customs Service officers says.

The ephedrine was stopped by customs at the border in late April. A cavity was made inside many of the boxes and within the stacks of paper to hide the ephedrine.

Three men, aged 31, 34 and 32, have been arrested and will appear in Auckland District Court on Saturday.

The charges they face include importation of a class B controlled drug (ephedrine) and possession of a class B drug for supply.

The largest previous seizure of ephedrine in New Zealand was about 95kg, found concealed in toys in October 2015.
