A 4.7-magnitude earthquake under Cook Strait has rattled the centre of the country but cause no apparent damage.

The quake hit 30km east of Seddon in Marlborough, at a depth of 13km, about 12.38am on Saturday.

Geonet rated its intensity as strong.

Nearly 900 people reported feeling the quake, most around Wellington, Blenheim and Nelson.

However, the Fire Service reported no damage from the shake.

There have been several significant quakes centred under the Cook Strait and Marlborough in recent years.

In 2013, 6.5 and 6.6 tremors damaged buildings in Wellington and the town of Seddon, population about 500.
