Hunt closer to NRL return for Brisbane

Brisbane halfback Ben Hunt is a step closer to making his NRL return from injury against the Wests Tigers on Friday night.

The Broncos will monitor how he pulls up from Tuesday training before deciding whether he returns after six weeks out with a hamstring injury.

Kodi Nikorima has stepped up in Hunt's absence, helping the Broncos win five straight to move into the top four.

But Brisbane prop Adam Blair said Hunt's possible return on Friday night had provided an extra spring in their step.

"Kodi has been doing a fantastic job. We've managed to win some games without Ben," he said.

"But it does boost the confidence knowing your key playmaker is coming back.

"He has looked sharp at training. He's been running around the last couple of weeks.

"It's up to him whether he plays (against Tigers) or waits another week."

Hunt's return could not return soon enough with Brisbane about to tackle the tough State of Origin period without their representative stars.

Centre James Roberts (ankle) looks set to return on Friday night after training strongly.

The Broncos also played down concerns for representative forwards Matt Gillett and Josh McGuire after they were on light duties on Tuesday.

"The coach took me off early just to freshen me up a little bit," Gillett said.
