A Hawke's Bay hunter reported overdue has been rescued from the Kuripapango area of the Kaweka Ranges.

A search operation for the 62-year-old man began at first light on Tuesday after police were alerted at 9.30pm on Monday.

Police, LandSAR volunteers and the Hawke's Bay Helicopter Rescue Trust were involved and found the man about midday by the Ngaruroro River.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin James says the man was tired and had a minor leg injury, but was otherwise unharmed and was airlifted out.

"The hunter did everything right after finding himself trapped by dangerously high river levels," he said.

"He stayed put and didn't try and cross the river as he understood the risk that it presented."

Det Sen Sgt James said one thing the hunter could have done was have a locator beacon with him and he might have been found the previous night.
