Hurricanes drop Savea, Aso for Waratahs

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd has dropped both wingers, including All Black Julian Savea, for Friday's clash with the Waratahs.

Savea and Vince Aso, who goes to the bench, make way for Cory Jane, back from a neck injury, and Wes Goosen, who will both make their first starts of the Super Rugby season in Wellington.

They are among four changes to the starting XV which beat the Reds 34-15, where loose forward Reed Prinsep moves from the reserves to No 8 and Ben May gets his first start at prop in place of Chris Eves.

Prinsep's promotion has been prompted by Ardie Savea's calf strain injury.

Boyd said a number of factors were behind the changes.

"If you look at Julian and Vince, they've both started all five matches so far, so it's a chance for them to freshen up, but equally it gives Cory and Wes an opportunity.

"At the end of the day we have faith in the depth in our squad, so whoever runs out we're confident they'll do the job. It's a long season and you need to utilise your whole squad."

Hurricanes captain Dane Coles hasn't yet recovered from a knee injury and halfback TJ Perenara will again lead the side in his absence.

Hurricanes: Jordie Barrett, Cory Jane, Matt Proctor, Ngani Laumape, Wes Goosen, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara (c), Reed Prinsep, Callum Gibbins, Brad Shields, Michael Fatialofa, Mark Abbott, Jeffery To'omaga-Allen, Ricky Riccitelli, Ben May.

Reserves: Leni Apisai, Chris Eves, Mike Kainga, Vaea Fifita, Toa Halafihi, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Otere Black, Vince Aso.
