Hutchins records Rio freestyle time

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 7/04/2016

Christchurch freestyle specialist Matthew Hutchins has become the second New Zealander to produce an Olympic qualifying performance at the Canadian swimming trials in Toronto.

Hutchins clocked 3min 49.84sec in his 400m heat to go under the Rio standard by 0.56sec.

The 21-year-old follows Corey Main, who achieved his target in the 100m backstroke on Wednesday, taking the number of Kiwis to produce a Rio performance to eight. Six achieved the goal at last month's national championships in Auckland.

Hutchins was the fastest of 55 swimmers in Thursday's heats although, as a foreigner, he can only contest the B-final.

The fourth-quickest time was recorded by New Zealand's Kevin Litherland but his 3:51.01 was more than half a second slower than required.

Hutchins has come off sharp form for the University of Wisconsin at the recent NCAA division one championships. He placed third in the 1650 yard (1508m) freestyle and sixth in the 500 yard (457m) race.

He was compelled to send just the second tweet on his timeline after Thursday's swim.

"See you soon Rio".
