Police have revealed Lower Hutt man Jardin Whanga-Elliott was assaulted twice the night he was fatally beaten after attending a 21st birthday party.

They are now trying to find out what happened between the two attacks - the first outside the party in Cleland Cr and the second, which proved fatal, in nearby Seddon St early on Sunday morning.

Sightings of a red Mazda Familia may prove crucial.

Mr Whanga-Elliott died from his serious head injuries in hospital on Tuesday night.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the Seddon St attack to come forward, says Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Barnett.

Mr Whanga-Elliott would have known his attackers, he said.

About 50 people would have been at the party. Police have spoken to about 25 and had a list of names - from the family where the party was held - they were still working through, including the group that may have been in Seddon St.

No CCTV from nearby businesses had so far proved useful.

Det Snr Sgt Glenn Barnett said it was too early to say if the attacks were provoked.

Mr Whanga-Elliott was young and fit and played league for Petone. His background was not part of the investigation.

About 30 officers are working on the case.

A 27-year-old Hutt Valley man was on Monday arrested and charged with assault linked with the investigation. However, he is unlikely to face more serious charges, police say.
