A Christchurch dairy worker has defended himself with a fire extinguisher after four men, some armed with baseball bats, stole off with ice cream, police say.

Officers were called to the Division Street Dairy in Riccarton on Thursday night following the report of the ice cream being stolen.

"It is believed at least two of the offenders, with their faces covered, have entered the dairy armed with baseball bats," police said in a statement.

"The shop attendant has used a fire extinguisher to protect himself."

No one was injured and police are still investigating.
