Immigration changes worry tourism industry

The tourism industry is warning that changes to immigration rules will make it harder for restaurants and cafes to recruit skilled chefs and managers.

The government announced last week it was raising the threshold for immigrants in the specialist skills category from 140 points to 160.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa says that under the new rule, about 90 per cent of the chefs approved for work visas last year would have missed out.

"It's disappointing the government went ahead with this change, despite advice from officials that two of the most affected occupations would be chef and cafe or restaurant manager," said chief executive Chris Roberts.

"Where are these essential workers supposed to come from? There simply isn't an adequate supply in many parts of the country."
