New Zealand's Patrick Bevin has featured prominently on another stage of the Tour de Suisse, sprinting home fourth in stage five.

Cannondale-Drapac professional Bevin was second in the second stage of the World Tour event which spans nine stages and has attracted some of the world's premier riders.

He was sixth overall through three stages before losing ground on the mountainous fourth stage on Tuesday.

That setback didn't deter the 26-year-old, who was on the pace at the finish line of the flat 222km stage from Bex to Cevio, won by two-time world champion Peter Sagan of Slovakia.

Bevin is 43rd overall, more than 13 minutes behind tour leader Damiano Caruso of Italy.

A handful of New Zealanders are contesting the tour, with Sam Bewley (Orica), Jack Bauer (Quick-Step Floors) and Aaron Gate (Aqua Blue) all pushing their claims for a spot in teams for the upcoming Tour de France.
