In-form Sitak wins Davis Cup selection

Artem Sitak's form has won him selection ahead of Marcus Daniell in the New Zealand Davis Cup team to face India in February.

A four-pronged team was named for the Asia/Oceania group one tie in Pune, including top-ranked singles player Rubin Statham, the most capped Kiwi Davis Cup player with 26 ties to his name.

Finn Tearney is a second singles option while world No.32 ranked doubles player Michael Venus was an obvious selection.

Team captain Alistair Hunt says Sitak won the other doubles berth over the higher-ranked Daniell on the basis of his form at last week's New Zealand championships in Auckland.

The 30-year-old not only won the doubles crown but he upset Tearney in the singles decider to secure a third national crown.

"We currently have several very good players, particularly in doubles and there's only 12 spots between Marcus and Artem on the ATP rankings," Hunt said.

"Artem played well to take the NZ champs. We need everyone available to play singles in India as anything can happen.

"I have firm belief that we can win this tie. It will take a big effort but we have the players to win."

New Zealand are 33rd in the latest Davis Cup rankings, 14 spots below India.
