Indian driver Gill wins Rally Whangarei

NZN 1/05/2016

Indian driver Gaurav Gill has won the international class at Rally Whangarei to stake an early lead in the Asia Pacific championship.

Gill and his Australian based co-driver Glenn Macneall had opened a winning margin of 30.4 seconds by the end of the three-day, 274.9km rally in Northland.

The Skoda driver repeated his 2014 win, taking the lead on the first of six special stages on gravel on Sunday.

German teammate Fabian Kreim had led narrowly overnight but his car lost turbo boost which wasn't rectified until mid-morning.

Kreim finished second while third place went to New Zealand driver Michael Young.

Only four international cars completed the gruelling rally, while 13 made it to the finish line in the New Zealand championship class.

That was won by Mt Maunganui's David Holder in a Mitsubishi from Emma Gilmour.

The rally lost its headline act on Saturday when World Rally Championship driver Hayden Paddon was forced out by mechanical issues.

Paddon was contesting the rally between WRC events, having claimed his maiden victory in Argentina last week.
