Scans have confirmed a traumatic stress fracture of the lower back and led coach Paul Henare to consider his options for a short-term replacement.

Ili, who is preparing for his first season as a fulltime contracted roster player, faces six weeks of inactivity before he can return to gym and weights work.

Henare says one option to fill the vacancy is bringing in a third import on a short-term deal.

"For now though, we are helping Shea get through a tough time with this sort of news, " Henare said on Tuesday.

"He just loves to train and play and was excited about the start to the season and now has to deal with the next six weeks of inactivity."

Ili, 23, is thought to have suffered the injury in a fall during the NZ NBL, but continued to play on and was part of the Tall Blacks' Olympic qualifying campaign.

The Breakers begin their season against Melbourne United on October 7.
