An exceptional year for Michael Venus is ending on a low after he was ruled out of the New Zealand tennis championships with injury.

Venus won't be in Auckland to defend his singles title this week, after suffering an ankle injury during training in Florida.

It leaves top-ranked Kiwi Finn Tearney the clear favourite to win the tournament and clinch the main draw wildcard spot available for next month's ASB Classic in Auckland.

A decision to focus on doubles in 2016 paid dividends for Venus, who qualified for nine finals and won four of them to climb to 32nd in the rankings.

Meanwhile, organisers have installed New Zealand-born, Canadian Erin Routliffe as top seed for the women's tournament.

The 21-year-old is a former top-20 ranked junior whose ranking is 634th.

The women's winner receives a wildcard entry into ASB Classic qualifying.
