Inmate dies at Hawke's Bay prison

The death of a prisoner at Hawke's Bay Regional Prison will be reviewed by the Corrections Inspectorate.

The man died at the prison, in Hastings, on Friday night.

His identity has not been released.

Acting prison director Nephi Hall said custodial and medical staff provided immediate assistance but the man could not be revived.

Police are investigating on behalf of the coroner to determine the cause of the man's death.

The Corrections Inspectorate will also review the death.

Corrections say they're unable to provide further information while the investigations are ongoing.
