Insanity plea in Rotorua kidnap case

The teen accused of kidnapping a Rotorua toddler from his home last year has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

The 17-year-old, whose name continues to be suppressed, appeared in Rotorua District Court on Monday morning.

Through his lawyer he pleaded not guilty by way of insanity.

He has been charged with unlawfully carrying off the 18-month-old with intent to cause him to be confined following events in the middle of December. The child's name is also suppressed.

The 17-year-old was remanded in custody until his next appearance on May 10.
