A man has been shot by two intruders in what Christchurch police believe is a targeted attack by people he knows.

The 25-year-old was shot in Morley Street, Bryndwyr, about 2am on Thursday, police say.

He was taken to Christchurch Hospital for surgery but his wounds are not thought to be life-threatening, says Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Ford.

The offenders and victim may have known each other, he said in a statement.

"Police believe this address and/or person was targeted and there is no immediate concern for the wider community."

They are hunting the two offenders and a purple 1998 Honda Accord, registration XC 4771. A black Subaru was also sought after being seen in the area.

The Morley St address is under guard while police examine the scene.
