A blaze that gutted an Invercargill home overnight is being treated as suspicious.

Three fire trucks and 18 crew arrived to find the house on Pomona Street well ablaze before midnight on Saturday.

The house was left with moderate to extensive damage but no one was found inside, the Fire Service said.

Investigators on the scene on Sunday were treating the blaze as suspicious, but the cause has yet to be found.
