A female Irish tourist has been stabbed in the leg with a large knife while jogging near Nelson.

Police have charged a 25-year-old man for allegedly stabbing the woman near Tahunanui Beach, a popular holiday spot in the region.

Two men were fighting in the area about 9pm on Friday, police say.

One of them then approached the woman and stabbed her in the leg with a large knife.

She wasn't known to either of the men.

The woman was helped by members of the public and has received hospital treatment.

The offender was arrested a short time later.
