Is Indecision Blocking Your Success?

There's a syndrome I see when I work with my clients that drives me nuts and makes me sad.
I call it the "IKOTA & DL Syndrome."
It stands for "I'll keep on thinking about it and decide later."

  • I'll decide later when I have more information.
  • I'll decide later when I have more time.
  • I'll decide later when I think it through.
  • I'll decide later when I do more research.
  • I'll decide later when I'm more certain.
  • I'll decide later when I'm in a better place.
  • I'll decide later when I have more money, more education, more ... whatever.
Do you suffer from IKOTA & DL Syndrome?
How has that worked out for you?
Anytime a client tries to hand me their IKOTA & DL Syndrome excuses, I ask: "Six months from now, where will you be?"
The answer is always the same: You will be in the same place muddling and puddling. You will be stuck in the same place, telling yourself you'll decide later.
The next time you feel yourself leaning toward an "I'll Decide Later" stance, pause and ask yourself: If had made this decision six months ago, where would I be right now?
I can assure you, you would definitely not be in the same place you were six months ago.
If you are ready to move one step, two steps or maybe 10 steps ahead of where you are, then you must take action and make a decision, now.
I get it. It's scary to make decisions.
You might fail and it might not turn out the way you want.
Then again, you might totally shine!
But, if you don't make that decision and go for it, you will never know.
Do you know someone who shines with confidence and seems as if they're unafraid to go for things they want?
Here's a secret: They are afraid, too.
The difference is that they don't let the thought that someone might laugh at them hold them back.
They are not afraid to take risks and potentially fail.
They know that taking action is the only way to learn. You can always adjust. It's only a mistake if you don't learn anything from it.
It was scary for me to leave the corporate world. Working in corporate was all I had ever known.
And, to be honest, it's still scary to run my own business.
But I love it! I love every second of being the leader of my own life. (You can read more about my journey here.)
Making decisions is taking action. And that is what leaders do.When you are indecisive, you become an obstacle to yourself and your growth. If you want to grow, you have to boldly step out into the unknown and make decisions.
Staying in a perpetual stall-out blocks your potential. That's not the way leaders treat themselves.
Really. Be kind to yourself. Take care of yourself.
Six months from now, you will wish you had started sooner... as in today!
